Been a while since I posted any updates here, summers been going really well and I got some pictures here I've been taking on my walks & the botanical garden. Also some skateboards I've been painting on, not all the way done but getting there. Also, here are the finalized shoes as well. Been working on some more stuff too but wanted to keep this post relatively limited in images, will be posting more soon.
Finished the line work on these new vans, and I went to an art exhibit for my friend Ezra, really fun event and he had some really clean photography. You can see more of his stuff on instagram HERE. Also been working on this big 53"x40" painitng, these are some wip pictures.
This is a sort of scarecrow jesus piece I'm making for an ambrosia drop, this is the work in porgress but I'm pretty excited about it because its been fun to work on but I got a few things to do, including fastening the die eyes in, also included these lil amborisa digital backgorunds I made. May or may not be used on something.
Kinda disappointed I havent posted here in a while. Been to work making some experimental loops. The new header on this page I made by making multiple prints with a linoleum cut and then using images of those as the frames.
The variety of the print is what gives it the stylized jitter. Although, with the non-shack ones I faded out frames to transtiton, giving it a different effect.
I also did some hand drawn ones with essientally the same process, this is different from traditional animation, as I do not get to trace my previous drawings. It provides more variety in the frames, creating the more morphy effect.
I'm probably going to try to use some of these in my thesis animation next year but if not, will defenitely be using the technique.
I started this fish drawing directly inspired by this escher drawing below. Really happy with how it's coming along.
got more work done on my linoleum blocks, kinda scared that they might not print right, but i'll see. Not fully done with them either, working on doing hatching for shading.
This was a monochromatic posca marker drawing I did in a friend's notbook as a gift a while back, I had a lot of fun with the bubbles and it was very flowy to make, reminded me of the drawing flow I used have in highschool.
I got some linoleum blocks recently, so I could make some designs to be printed on shirts. I havent carved anything like this since middle school and that was the only time I did it but it was cool and fun, so I'm prtty excited to get back into it. And I want to get good enough to do a woodblock-style print style for these slabs eventually (with hatching and stuff). But this is the one ive startd and I'm using eschers impossible cube and a snake of my own as a first test design, already cut my hand when the tool slipped so I'll make sure to be more careful.
This is a pair of shoes I ended up drawing on, I'm pretty happy with the colors and scheme of the design.
This is a more abstrct style painting I did over the last couple weeks, it started as just a way to not waste paint leftover from other projects, but I eventually got really into it. It's interesting texture is infinitely nicer in peron and is thanks to a layer of liquid latex under acrylic.
I did a lot more work this week on my stop motion project, I got a lot more footage and still have to edit it but I've included Screenshots from the part that is partially edited and I think it lets the viewer see my vision a bit clearer.
I finished inking the fish I started last week, I'm very happy with how they turned out, especially the jellfish which I really want to animate but I'm not sure where I would find the time for it, especially considering how I wanna animate a lot of stuff.
I finished inking the clocktower drawing I posted about here, the other week. I'm really happy with how it turned out but now I sorta wanna animate it but I feel like it would take eons with how I'm envisioning it. But I'll see if there's a rationalization I can use to commit all that time to this piece. I also started inking the fish I sketched at the aquarium the other week. An image of one of the work in progress pages is included below.
I got a lot of work done this week on my stop motion project, it was tiring to film but it's got me really excited about how it's gonna look. This is a picture from when I was setting up the shot, I like how it looks with the colors.
I had spring break this past week and my morning glory I've been growing indoors (non-ideal) bloomed!!! I was super happy to see all three flowers I got to open up and it feels like an accomplishment because this is the fourth or fifth time I've grown morning glories indoors but this is the first time I've gotten it to bloom.
I went to the aquarium on thursday and I saw some cool fish and sharks and tried to sketch them very fast. I didn't take any pictures of them but I might post the sketches here, once I ink them. However, I did take a picture of the filtration room which I want to attempt to draw one day, maybe I could cover some of the pipe sections in geometric patterns.
I finished that drawing I posted about here on blog post 8, I'm really happy with how it came out and coloring it would be really fun, but I'm not sure when I'll have the time for it. Hopefully this summer I can get it done. I also started on a new micron on paper piece for fun, I feel like I always need one of these drawings going for when I'm feeling bored or burnt out or overly motivated to pursue my personal visions.
Printed out test versions of my business card and postcard I made for one of my classes. I'm happy with how they look.
This is a drawing I've been working at for some time now, its more abstrct and geomtric then some of my previous pieces that resemble it, but I can't wait to fully flesh it out. Might take some time because I have assigments due at MICA but I work on it at times I can't work on my larger projects.
When going anywhere for more then 20 minutes, I don't really leave without my sketchbook or a means of drawing. It's always been a crutch for me when I get bored or if don't know what to do, I can just bust out the sketchbook and start drawing. But becasue of how long I've had the curtch I get really anxious leaving without my sketchbook.
Also this is the sketchbook it's drawn in; it's pretty cool as almost an alternative use for antiques but the cover is from a guy's (henry m. stanley) book he made to justify his colonialist behaviors. I looked him up and apparently he was in the Belgian congo, so he had to have commited some atrocities which is unfortunate, now he's on the cover of my sketchbook. The illustrations also allude to his practices as a colonizer.
This saturday, my friend and I got some Soups on (https://www.soupsonbalto.com), I got the crab soup and it was nice. We then went to the "Stick in the dirt" film festival. I had submitted and gotten in, so I had the privilege of watching my "mechanical" animation (viewable under "portfolio>animation" on this site) on the big screen at flavely hall which was very nice for me. Seeing all the other wonderful MICA animation works was very fun too and I was happy to see them, especially the ones I hadn't seen before.
After the festival my friend was happy to see them too and we discussed the ones we thought were the coolest and I started talking to him about the different techniquies I noticed within the animations.
After making my logo, I redesigned my buisness card I made for my "professional development for animators class". I wanted this buisness card to be more "me" and I think the idea of the shack, with the woodstove, communicates that more effectively, especially since it's my new logo. I also made a pattern, specifically for the back side of it, I think it would be rellay fun to get printed because I zoomed out to where they would be "life sized" (3.5"x2") and I really enjoyed the effect they had on that scale.
On this website, I was originally using the orange guy with the weird teeth, on the left as the "logo". And although I like him and he is a good represetation of what I try to do with my art, I though having a logo that represents the "art shack" more directly would be fun.
So I drew the little shack on the right and it's my vision of the "art shack". After installing it on the website, I realized I needed a simplified version too, so I made the bottom one, without all the extra details.
The ceramic pot, I really like the design of, but I’m not happy with how the glaze turned out, I think it took a lot of the power out of the patterns because the colors didn’t turn out how I anticipated. I made this in spring of 2023 and it was my first ceramics class ever, so I was low on experience. I recently put my morning glory vine in the pot, since it got a bit bigger. I’m really hoping it flowers but I don’t fully know how the indoor conditions are going to effect it’s life cycle, only time will tell. 🤞 (same plant as first blog post).
At my apartment building, in the laundry room, people give away stuff they don't need, and this weekend there was a box full of these Orange 988 stress balls. The box had to have maybe a hundred or so of them so I took 4 and planned to draw on them. I did one thats like a flower pattern and another eyeball pattern.
The eyeballs look a little too ominous for the 988 message, so I think for the rest I’ll try to do some nice and happy flower patterns, like the one on the right. I think 988 is very important and underrated for those going through hard times, so I’m happy to draw on these because I care about the message. I think I’m gonna keep a couple of these and give a couple away.
This is my second blog post, I'm excited to do more of them and I'm happy with how this page and the homepage are starting to look. It might be funny to look back on if I change it a lot and like the new one more, but for now I like it like this. Some of the gifs I used in the homepage were from this animation I made last fall (fall 2023).
Hello! Grady here, and I'm excited to say I'm finally developing my website! As you can see, I've been focusing on trying to give it some funk in the design. There are currently quite a few placeholders on this site, but I'll see what I can do as I expand it. What you see now on this site is the outline for me to work within.
I wasted a ton of time trying to make my own font but it didn't work out the way I wanted. I will try again at some point in the future but at least now I can copy paste those letters to use if I want to reuse some of my letters.
Pictured on the left is a gif of a 3d morning glory-covered-street lamp I made in fall 2022.
